Synopsis
This text for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students examines the events that led to a major intellectual revolution of the early nineteenth century: the rigorous reinterpretation of the calculus undertaken by Augustin-Louis Cauchy and his peers. These intellectuals transformed the uses of calculus from problem-solving methods into a collection of well-defined theorems about limits, continuity, series, derivatives, and integrals. The Origins of Cauchy's Rigorous Calculus illustrates the reformation of eighteenth-century concepts into the rigorous modern approach, offering insights and perspectives on the foundations of analysis. The author begins by defining rigor and describing the characteristic nineteenth-century view of analysis, proceeding to an examination of eighteenth-century views of the calculus and the decided lack of interest in the foundations of analysis. Most of the book traces Cauchy's innovative methods of refining the specific achievements of eighteenth-century mathematics into the basis of rigorous calculus. It places particular emphasis on the development of the algebra of inequalities-ideas on limits, continuity, and convergence, as well as certain eighteenth-century treatments of the derivative and integral-and demonstrates the crucial role of Joseph-Louis Lagrange's work in the transition to new ways of thinking.
