An average of 5,000 people die in the United States each day, and a standard funeral service and casket run well over $5,000, excluding burial costs that can easily run up to $5,000. This means that around $50 million gets spent in this sphere on a daily basis, or around $18.25 billion per annum. As produced by and originally aired on The History Channel, this unique episode of the documentary series MODERN MARVELS examines the funerary industry from the inside out, with commentary by such experts as the Senior VP of Operations for Forest Lawn Memorial Parks and Mortuaries, and the President of Quiring Monuments. The program asks penetrating questions about what specifically goes on behind the scenes after someone dies; it also interpolates insights by historians to look not only at how death has evolved over the centuries, but at how economics have become integrated into various cultural perspectives on death - for example, the ancient Greek practice of placing coins on the eyes of corpses to help those individuals pay "tolls" on their way into the afterlife. The episode also touches on some of the more bizarre burial and crematory requests that survivors issue to funeral parlors (and the expenses that these requests entail), such as the desire to have one's ashes sent into orbit around the moon.
