Director Mike Woolf serves up a slice of pure Americana in his documentary film short GROWIN' A BEARD. Travelling to the dusty outpost of Shamrock, Texas, Woolf sets out to chronicle the Panhandle town's annual beard-growing contest, a hirsute tradition dating back to 1938. From January 1st to March 17th and under penalty of law (abstainers must submit a $1 shaving permit!), Shamrock's menfolk cultivate Donegal beards--thick, fuzzy facial hair running along the chin and sides of the face, sans moustache--to be judged at the town's St. Patrick's Day parade. Against the twangy roots-rock of Austin band The Gourds, Woolf documents four eccentric locals and one big-city interloper as they make beard-inducing preparations ranging from vitamins to Irish chlorophyll pills, resulting in a funny yet heartfelt portrait of rural small-town America.
