Trust you have only used caliper paint and not Hammerite of plastic coating as they leave an Oily residue, the vinyl is the very best 8 years plus, if you put your finger on the adhesive you will see it is very sticky also did you leave for 20+ minute before trying to remove the carrier film this will help the adhesive cut through any grease left on the surface
