Seller Notes: “Very interesting cast bronze "1941 Battle of Crete", medal designed by Karl Goetz (Kienast ... “Very interesting cast bronze "1941 Battle of Crete", medal designed by Karl Goetz (Kienast reference #587). Early in the war Goetz designed this medal to commemorate the hard-fought May 1941 invasion of Crete battle, code-named "Operation Mercury". At the time it was the largest airborne operation in history and the first time airborne troops were able to defeat a numerically superior enemy force. The medal is expertly done in the unique Karl Goetz artistic style - obverse depicts a German airborne trooper in the classic German jump stance; several Junkers transports dropping more troops on reverse. Great overall condition with attractive dark-chocolate patina; weights about 64 grams, about 58 mm in diameter; comes with green fitted box lined in red silk. This medal was probably cast in the 1950th-1960th by Guido Goetz - Karl's son. Guido is a sculptor and a medalist himself; after Karl's death he inherited his shop and all the original medal dies and casts.”
