Synopsis
This authoritative introduction to African American English (AAE) is the first textbook to look at the grammar as a whole. Clearly organised, it describes patterns in the sentence structure, sound system, word formation and word use in AAE. The book uses linguistic description and data from conversation to explain that AAE is not a compilation of random deviations from mainstream English but that it is a rule-governed system. The textbook examines topics such as education, speech events in the secular and religious world, and the use of language in literature and the media to create black images. This much-needed book includes exercises to accompany each chapter and will be essential reading for students in linguistics, education, anthropology, African American studies and literature., This authoritative introduction to African American English (AAE) is the first textbook to look at the grammar as a whole. I'm giving it three stars because I was missing one of the three books that was advertised. The seller did warn that the box set cover for the books and poster weren't available. However they failed to mention one of the books was missing from the box set. Luckily I did get the ones that I really wanted, the quality and condition of the books are great, good value if I received all four, packing was safe.

This seller exceeded my expectations. Talk about super value…I received three more books than I expected. I expected Gulag Archipelago and received all of the works by the author. I’m so happy I could kiss someone. The shipping was fantastic. Everything was packaged very nicely and it arrived very quickly. The condition of the books are definitely as described and I think even a little better. Bless your hearts. As described and then some.
