This fitting needed filing to fit. The machine tolerance was too close to the actual dimensions of the wand it was to slot into and needed to be smaller pin-to-pin. Easily fixable with a metal rasp or coarse sandpaper and about half an hour of removing material and test fitting periodically - but somewhat disappointing when you expect to be able to use it out of box.
