These sensors correlate to the striped patterns on the mousepad which is used to translate towards movement. Works far better than any ball mouse, mousepad feels weird to use but it works with any DOS machine with any standard serial driver

Works pretty much just like a modern optical mouse, so long as you keep it on the pad and the pad oriented the right way. No special driver needed, just use regular CTMOUSE. Solves a big problem running old machines with no PS/2 or USB port regarding mice; the problem of ball mice.
