Both engines are powered, one engine is master with all the electronics, the other engine omits the electronics but has the motors in each truck which is now a slave engine. The slave engine has no speaker nor any smoke unit, but must be connected to the master engine through a small cable included in kit. So both engines do pull, but only one engine controls both, rather than 2 independent engines, they both work well and have full lighting.
