I confirmed with Apple Customer service online and over the phone that this is a legitimate serial number. The serial number, as Apple designates, is on the left ear cup. There is also a longer number on the right ear cup, this is not the serial number. Also, the original box was not returned with the headphones. There was no packing material whatsoever in the return package that was missing the original box.
