Little Mac is back in "Super Punch-Out" for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. After defeating opponents like Glass Joe, Don Flamenco, and even Mike Tyson, Little Mac is ready for a new challenge. In "Super Punch-Out," you'll fight 16 opponents across four different circuits. Some opponents return from the first game, such as Bald Bull and Piston Honda, and there are plenty of new faces that make their debut. While the game is a sequel to the NES version of "Punch-Out," the SNES game plays more like the arcade version. Characters now take up more of the screen and Little Mac himself is translucent. Instead of three rounds of three minutes each, gameplay is now one long round that ends after three knockdowns. The match can also end from a well-timed punch that knocks your opponent unconscious. The graphics take a slightly more cartoonish approach.Gameplay remains similar as Mac retains the moves that helped him knock out Mike Tyson in the original version. Mac can punch foes in their face and stomach, building up a super meter with each successful hit. Your normal punches range from jabs to body blows. When this super meter is full, Mac can pull off devastating punches. Each punch has different properties depending on the button combination you press. One punch is a powerful uppercut that will take a chunk off your opponent's life meter. Another punch is a flurry of rapid punches that will stun an opponent. However, you'll need to be careful as your opponent can deflect a punch. Your foe will also take every opportunity to punch you back. Mac can either block a punch or dodge in three different directions. Depending on the punch, you will need to perform a specific action from your available defensive moves. For example, ducking during Bald Bull's charge will just end with you getting a punch to the face. Instead, dodging to the side will see you live to fight another day."Super Punch-Out" for the SNES isn't your typical boxing game. In this SNES game, each boxer will use more than their fists to knock out their opponent. Heike Kagero will use a series of kicks to knock you out. Hoy Quarlow will use his cane during a battle. The Bruiser brothers will even break your arm during a match, forcing you to punch with only one arm. Bear Hugger will hug you so hard that you will pass out. Some characters, like Mr. Sandman, are invulnerable in certain parts of their body. Anything goes in "Super Punch-Out," so you need to be ready for whatever each boxer throws at you. As you play "Super Punch-Out," a battery on the game will save your progress. The battery on "Super Punch-Out" also saves your best times against each opponent along with your score. While expert players can defeat "Super Punch-Out" in under an hour, beginners will keep coming back to get a better score. "Super Punch-Out" has no official rating, however, the game only features mild animated violence.
