A Roma nel 476 d.C. impero è in pericolo. Alla vigilia della cerimonia che deve incoronare imperatore il dodicenne Romolo Augusto, arriva a Roma il generale barbaro Odoacre per trattare con Oreste. Odoacre chiede l'impero romano come equa ricompensa per il suo decennale sostegno alle legioni romane in Oriente. Ma Oreste rifiuta. Nella notte, dopo l'incoronazione di Romolo, Odoacre torna a Roma con il suo esercito. Oreste viene massacrato e Romolo è catturato insieme ad Ambrosino, suo tutore, e chiuso nella fortezza di Capri. Aurelio, comandante della quarta legione e sopravvissuto alla battaglia, parte alla ricerca di Romolo, accompagnato da un piccolo gruppo di uomini e da un misterioso guerriero bizantino, che si rivelerà essere una bellissima e giovane donna, Mira. Romolo viene liberato, ma presto si scopre che i bizantini hanno unito le loro forze all'esercito goto di Odoacre: l'unica salvezza è partire alla ricerca della nona legione in Britannia, l'ultima rimasta fedele a Roma.
