I needed it so I could replace the aging 1990-era hard drive in my 386 laptop with a CF card - the Option ROM socket on the NIC can be used to install the XT-IDE Universal BIOS (XUB) and this particular card seemed well documented with plenty of adjustable configurations. My 386 laptop is now working beautifully with a CF card.
