The front and back are both embossed. It came with two surprise gifts, pictured, two little embossed notebooks (a camel on one and a peacock on the other. The journal was well wrapped and the metal closures were covered in a sponge to protect them. Flawless encounter! The notebook was a great price and I am very pleased with the condition of the package and notebook when it arrived.
