Synopsis
This volume examines the history of the U.S. government's Indian education policy and the current academic issues that affect Native Americans in today's on and off-reservation schools. Though the federal government's policy of educating Native American children through assimilation or "Americanization" has long been eliminated, there are still many shortcomings in the methods that are used to instruct young Native Americans today. Despite these deficiencies, many Native people have begun to take ownership in teaching their children about their unique culture, history, and language, and will continue to promote self-determination in the coming years. Book jacket., Trace the history of education from Indian boarding schools to present-day reservation schools, including the revitalization and teaching of Indian language and culture, policies, and educational goals.
