The Legendary Axe is an action tale of rescue, bravery, and might. As the mighty warrior Gogan, you must go to the "Evil Place" of the human sacrificing Jagu and fight your way through six zones, some with multiple stages, to save your childhood friend Flare. Each zone has a horde of enemies (that's horde, as in multitudes!) and at least one boss character (usually more). Your only weapon is "Sting," the legendary axe given to you by the elders of your village, Minofu.<br><br>Gogan's strength is measured by a vitality gauge, which can be increased or restored through power-ups, and augmented by a power gauge, which drops after each offensive attack. Killing Jagu minions earns points, which result in extra lives when various point levels are reached. Other power-ups include a wing that increases attack speed, three levels of "life-recovers" that restore the vitality gauge a set number of times, "one-ups" to increase number of remaining lives, and red and blue crystals that increase your score by 1000 and 5000 points respectively.<br><br>After you clear the first five zones, the game culminates in a mind-bending maze, known as the Pits of Madness, consisting of no fewer than 20 rooms filled with every type of creature encountered in the game plus some new enemies. Failure to take the right path through any part of the maze will transport you back to the beginning to try again. Get through the maze and you're home free -- once you defeat the evil foot-stomping, hero-smashing leader of the evil hordes, Jagu himself, in zone six!
