Synopsis
A remarkable example of 15th-century French hospital architecture, the Hotel-Dieu at Beaune, in Burgundy, was founded in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin, chancellor of Philip the Good. It remained a charitable institution for more than five centuries: medical progress meant ongoing changes to the building, but overall the original structure has been preserved. Gifts and legacies over the years have left the Hotel-Dieu with an impressive heritage that includes religious paintings - most outstandingly Rogier Van der Weyden's Last Judgement polyptych - together with portraits, tapestries and the furnishings and kitchenware provided for the patients. This book offers a detailed guide to the building and the collection it houses, and notably to a number of rooms now closed to the public. Book jacket.
