About this product

Product Information

Settlers made their way to Candor along an old Native American trail between the Susquehanna River in Owego and the mouth of Cayuga Lake in Ithaca in the early 1790s. Sawmills, gristmills, tanneries, farms, and small settlements soon sprang up. In the 1830s, the Ithaca and Owego Railroad, the second railroad chartered and one of the first to carry passengers in New York State, paved the way for progress in this rural community and allowed York buckwheat flower to be shipped throughout the state. Wand s glove factory shipped gloves around the world, and Barager s horse blanket factory boomed. The residents were industrious, religious, and valued a good education, building the many one-room schoolhouses that sprinkled the countryside. Candor explores the town s growth between the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century through unique photographs, providing a reminder of the people, places, businesses, and events that help define Candor today."

Publication: Ithica Times Article Title: Candor Historian Releases New Book Author: Jesse Disbrow Date: 11/15/2008 History buffs in the town of Candor can rejoice as Carol Henry has once again brought a new book to reflect on the history of the region. Henry's interest in Candor's past really started to in 1989 when she became the secretary for the Tioga County Bicentennial Celebration. She worked on that until 1991 and contributed a chapter for the county's history book Seasons of Change. In 1993 she became the Deputy Historian for the Town and Village of Candor and took over as historian in 1995. In 2000, she helped form the first ever historical society in Candor and also published her first historical book, "Village of Candor: Yesterday and Today - A Centennial Celebration Edition." Her new book is part of Arcadia Publishing's "Images of America" series. Called "Images in America" Candor the book shows off the Candor area's history in pictures. Pictures that range from the early nineteenth century when the town of Candor was young until the middle of the twentieth century are accompanied by short narrative paragraphs. The book highlights the businesses, education and religious diversity of the region as well as the homes and pastimes of the families and people of Candor. There are even some parts on the surrounding towns that played a part in Candor's development. Henry was inspired to write this book when looking at a collection of postcards and photographs taken during the early 1900s, as well as by the community's great interest in its history. She also said that it would be a great way to interest new people in the history of Candor. "It was an opportunity to educate the younger generation and newer residents by offering a pictorial history of Candor," Henry said. Henry had the resources of the town historian in her hands but that didn't end up being nearly enough to fill the book. Henry had to look around to other families and collectors in the area to find more pictures. From there she had to do even more work to build the captions for each picture. "Identifying places, names, historic information for these seldom written about people and places took some sleuthing," said Henry. "This was a time consuming process; taking the time to talk to the residents of Candor in order to obtain the interesting tidbits that would add flavor to this book." Henry said that the fact that the book is a picture book should be the most appealing part of the book She said that owning this book would be almost like having your own personal collection of these early postcards. The captions will also give new light to the area. Readers might find ancestors they knew or didn't know about. They will also find out that Candor has a connection to today's Footlocker shoe store and the college text book, "Small Town in Mass Society," portrays a fictional town called Springdale, which is actually Candor. The book is currently on sale at several local retailers but if you are looking for a more personal touch to this book Henry will be signing books at two different dates in the next few months. On Friday, November 14 she will be signing books from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Barnes and Noble in Vestal. On Sunday, December 14 she will be signing books right in Candor for the Candor Historical Society between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.
