It is hoped that they may be found useful by others engaged in designing or erecting buildings. The following Syllabus of the Science and Art Department has been taken as a guide in the arrangement of the Notes, and in determining the subjects to be treated upon. As the object of this Course of Instruction is to lay the foundation of a sound knowledge of the principles, as well as of the practice, of Building Construction, and so lead the workman to labour with his head at the same time as with his hands, the teacher should not, necessarily, attempt to push the students through the whole of the subjects enumerated in this syllabus, but should limit the range of his tuition according to the time at his command and the intelligence of the pupils. A larger number of questions will be set in the examination papers for the Elementary and Advanced stages, than the candidates will be allowed to attempt, so that he will, to a certain extent, be able to show his knowledge in such branches as he may, from circumstances, have paid special attention to. For instance, a student better acquainted with iron than wooden structures will be able to select a question on iron, in preference to one on wood, work.
