In the early 1990s, Green Day injected the punk scene with a new life, introducing their catchy pop riffs infused with lyrics that reflected the current slacker mentality. Influenced by such first-generation bands like the Buzzcocks, the group introduced punk to a new generation, and the award-winning record DOOKIE managed to perfectly capture the mindset of a generation. The release of their 2004 album, AMERICAN IDIOT, retained their hardnosed criticism of American culture with songs like "Jesus of Suburbia" and of course, the title track. This exploration of Green Day's history follows the band's trajectory from the Bay Area's Gilman St. punk scene in the early 1990s, to their status as one of the most successful punk bands the world has ever seen.
