"The standard not only for other textbooks in linguistics but also for all works dealing with a grammatical category." General Linguistics, 'Number is an area of morphosyntactic typology that has often been taken for granted by linguistic researchers. In this comprehensive typological survey, Corbett convincingly shows that the complexity and diversity of number systems in the languages of the world far surpasses what is commonly assumed.'Thomas E. Payne, The Linguist, "[A]n exemplary treatment of a linguistic category...well-organized and clearly written. [A]n excellent guide for any student of linguistics and a comprehensive handbook of encyclopedic character for professional linguists." Leonid Kulikov, University of Nijmegen, Southwest Journal of Linguistics, ‘Number is an area of morphosyntactic typology that has often been taken for granted by linguistic researchers. In this comprehensive typological survey, Corbett convincingly shows that the complexity and diversity of number systems in the languages of the world far surpasses what is commonly assumed.’Thomas E. Payne, The Linguist, 'Number is an area of morphosyntactic typology that has often been taken for granted by linguistic researchers. In this comprehensive typological survey, Corbett convincingly shows that the complexity and diversity of number systems in the languages of the world far surpasses what is commonly assumed.' Thomas E. Payne, The Linguist, "This book is another magnum opus by Corbett, to add to his earlier books on agreement and gender. It develops arguments from these works, while also breaking completely new ground. Number will be of great interest to all linguists, and also those from outside the field. Corbett is to be congratulated...and his next magnum opus will be awaited with eager anticipation." Canadian Slavonic Papers

Synopsis
Number is the most underestimated of the grammatical categories. It is deceptively simple yet distinctions in number (as in cat versus cats ) vary considerably from language to language. Some languages, for instance, make more distinctions than English, having three, four or even five different values. This book draws on examples from many languages to analyze the possibilities and reveals that the world's linguistic resources are richer than even many linguists realize. It is intended for linguistic students and teachers and is an ideal entry to linguistic typology., Number is the most underestimated of the grammatical categories. It is deceptively simple yet the number system which philosophers, logicians and many linguists take as the norm - namely the distinction between singular and plural (as in cat versus cats) - is only one of a wide range of possibilities to be found in languages around the world. Some languages, for instance, make more distinctions than English, having three, four or even five different values. Adopting a wide-ranging perspective, Greville Corbett draws on examples from many languages to analyse the possible systems of number. He reveals that the means for signalling number are remarkably varied and are put to a surprising range of special additional uses. By surveying some of the riches of the world's linguistic resources this book, first published in 2000, makes a major contribution to the typology of categories and demonstrates that languages are much more varied than is generally recognised., This book, first published in 2000, provides an introduction to the grammatical category of number, surveying many languages to reveal that the world's linguistic resources are richer than even many linguists realise. Aimed at linguistic students, it is the first book-length treatment of this topic and can serve as an entry to linguistic typology.
