Ich wollte mich an meine Kindheit in Puerto Rico erinnern. Und ich wusste, dass in Kuba (anders als im modernen Puerto Rico, Anm. d.V.) die Zeit in vielerlei Hinsicht stillgestanden hatte. (...) Ich fand mein Puerto Rico im Westen Havannas, auf den Tabakfarmen bei Pinar del Rio oder im Osten in Playa Girón an der Schweine-bucht, und weiter Richtung Cienfuegos und Trinidad und Camagüey! Und neue Freunde - ich fand eine einzigartige Gemeinschaft, dem Fremden fremd, aber mir fast wie eine Familie.« (Manuel Rivera-Ortiz) Manuel Rivera-Ortiz (*1968 in Puerto Rico) ist Dokumentarfotograf und Schriftsteller. 2009 gründete er die Manuel Rivera-Ortiz Foundation for Documentary Photography & Film.
