Reviews
"Maybe Mike Kelly is a writer who fishes; maybe he's a angler who writes. Regardless, his latest book "Trout Streams of Western New York" offers up a ton of great information you can take to the bank - the streambank. His exhaustive research will lead you to great days on the water, and the book's user-friendly format will accelerate your learning curve for these fine waters. I'll have a copy in my truck.", As most of my readers know, I generally do not recommend books that I receive from various publishers. But there are exceptions, and here is one of them. "Trout Streams Of Western New York", written by J. Michael Kelly, is an absolutely essential reference for anyone who enjoys trout fishing in any notable stream in DEC's Region 9 area to our west. What I like most about this tome is the clear and specific directions the author gives to more than 50 stream locations in six counties and Allegany State Park. I have fished six of those streams with fly rod in hand, and I can attest that this author knows his stuff. That he has been able to detail all of the notable streams is, to me, mind boggling. But this book is not only for fly fishermen. People using the right spinning gear (I happen to also like ultra-light spinning rods, light lines, and tiny reels for stream fishing) can take their share of fish, too. Every area limited to fly fishing only (there are only a few of them) are clearly located in his stream descriptions. This is a really good book for visitors and locals alike. Kelly has done a great job that any angler can take advantage of.

This book about angling for trout in the Buffalo, Niagara Falls and Southern Tier regions provides beginners and local experts alike with the essential ingredients for great fishing, including clear directions to more than 50 top-notch streams in six counties and Allegany State Park, which may be the best-kept and most overlooked angling destination in New York State. Kelly brings his angling mastery to large trout waters like the serpentine Ischua Creek north of Olean, the upper Genesee River and its no-kill area near Wellsville and the scenic, wild-fish-only Wiscoy Creek in southern Wyoming County, and many more, with precise instructions on where, when and how to catch fish with both fly and spinning tackle. The most effective techniques and equipment are covered in full, along with go-to flies for the fly fisherman. And he enlists amateurs and experts alike to join a conservation crusade on behalf of natural resources which need, above all else, some well-motivated friends.
