Synopsis
Some Japanese new religious movements have made considerable inroads into the religious and cultural life of societies outside Japan and others have hardly expanded beyond the-confines of an already existing Japanese community. The reasons for the success or failure of Japanese hew religions are major themes in the volume. The attraction of 'this-worldly' rewards in the Japanese new religions is a theme which recurs in several contributions particularly relating to Sekai Kyusei Kyo and other movements in Brazil. Of further interest is the idea of the causes of sickness and spiritual healing employed by movements such as Tensho Kotai Jingu Kyo, Mahikari and Sekai Kyusei Kyo. Finally, millenarian dimensions of Japanese new religious are also explore as a means of recruitment and as an ideology of change. The work will be of central relevance to students and scholars of Japanese Studies and Religious Studies, and will also be of interest to anthropologists, sociologists and historians, and to anyone with a desire to understand more about the phenomenon of new religious in our society. Book jacket., Since the 1960s virtually every part of the world has seen the arrival and establishment of Japanese new religious movements, a process that has followed quickly on the heels of the most active period of Japanese economic expansion overseas. This book examines the nature and extent of this religious expansion outside Japan.
