"A Book of Nonsense" e "More Nonsense", pubblicati a Londra rispettivamente nel 1846 e nel 1871, sono una raccolta di brevi composizioni in versi con le quali l'autore intendeva illustrare una serie di suoi disegni caricaturali. Versi e disegni nacquero gli uni per gli altri e formano un tutto indivisibile. L'incongruo, reso immmagine dalla fantasia, rimane il centro d'attrazione - nucleo veramente creato e non analizzabile - della letteratura del "nonsense" e in particolre del "nonsense" di Lear, ma quel nucleo informa di sé ogni minima parte dell'espressione.
