This new installation to the series advances the structure and gameplay of its predecessors without removing any of its best features. With more teams to choose from, you have the opportunity to enter the soccer field with players that are best suited to your playing style. Each of the UEFA’s affiliates at the time of production is represented within this N64 game, providing a sense of international community and giving you a solid variety of teams from which to pick. International Superstar Soccer 2000, much like other sports games in this Nintendo 64 series, offers several different play modes with easy navigation between each. You can customize a player in the Create a Player mode, developing a soccer player who may garner fans’ votes out on the field. The four player exhibition allows you to play against another team, while World League sets you against a number of other teams from around the world. For a challenge to your own skills and those of your players, you can try out the scenario games, where you must complete given elements within a game in order to finish the level. The action is kept going by extra features like the sound of crowds cheering in the background and commentary provided by a sports announcer outside the field. In addition, there are three referees whose unique idiosyncrasies provide an extra layer of realism over the game. Their responses to your players on the field deliver a realistic feeling of tension and excitement that draws you into the game. A combination of solid gameplay, 100 playable international teams, recognizable player names, and different game modes can make it no surprise that International Superstar Soccer 2000 for Nintendo 64 can live up to its ratings.
