The 50th Anniversary of the Superstar Introduces New Buyers to adidas Classic
The adidas Superstar sneaker, created as a low-top version of the adidas Pro Model basketball shoe, made its debut in 1969-70 and slowly grew an organic following in New York Citys black and Hispanic music and dance scene. This Superstar '80s sneakers are an example of what's old is new again.
It wasnt until 1984 when Run DMC emerged on the scene dressed in Kangol hats, adidas track suits, and unlaced Superstars that the marriage of brand and band was complete. Once adidas saw how quickly the universe took notice, it signed an endorsement deal with the group in 1986. The song My Adidas from the groups 1986 album Raising Hell was essentially a love song written for adidas Superstars, the low-top sneakers with a following in the hip hop community and breakdance scene. The endorsement, the first between a sneaker brand and a hip hop band, gave the brand invaluable street cred and gave Run DMC access to a wider audience as well as new endorsement opportunities. The adidas Ultrastar was the first shoe in the Run DMC/adidas collab.
