Quonset Building Kits

All About Quonset Metal Building Kits

A modular building constructed of steel is one way to add a garage or extra storage to your property or job site. They can be temporary structures or placed on a permanent foundation. They are an option for a lighter weight all-purpose structure.

What is a Quonset metal building?

Builders created Quonset huts from arched metals. Each arch can be connected to the next to form a building of almost any length. They do not need any center supports, which allows for more usable space on the inside. Manufacturers commonly make these prefabricated buildings out of steel or iron. Because of the types of metal used, the structures can be engineered to withstand some snow load and some degree of wind.

Two people may be able to piece together a smaller building. More substantial and taller huts might require more help. The arches are secured together with nuts and bolts.

What are some of the designs of the metal buildings?

The metal buildings are quite versatile. Some of the configurations you can find on eBay include:

  • Garages - These can be built for a single car, double car, or RV storage, and they have no interior spans to interfere with parking.
  • Quonset-style storage buildings - These modular structures begin at 20 feet by 20 feet. Because they are metal, they have some level of resistance against fire and pests.
  • Barns - These are used to store hay or grain. Barns made with modular construction can store tractors, have kennels, or contain horse runs.
  • Warehouses - These durable steel buildings are used for job sites, shipping containers, or housing goods. They are an option for more extensive operations.
How is a Quonset modular building assembled?

It is a four-step process, but the fourth step can be eliminated if you want an open-air building. An open-air structure does not have any walls at the entrance or the exit to let air flow through it freely. Contact your local and state administrators for building codes and regulations. The general instructions for putting together the steel building are:

  1. Assemble the modular buildings arches with the supplied nuts and bolts.
  2. Pull up or raise the arch. Smaller arches can be raised as a single piece. Larger arches can be lifted one half at a time.
  3. Attach arch after arch until the steel building is complete.
  4. Install the prefabricated end walls.
