Finding the Right Collegiate Horse Saddle

Collegiate saddles are saddles used to equip horses for show, work, and recreational use. Collegiate saddles are the official English saddle of the American Quarter Horse Association and the official saddle of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association. These gently used and affordable saddles are durable and made to last for many years.

How do English and Western Collegiate saddles differ?

The main difference is the horn, which is present on the Western saddle but not on the English saddle. The Western saddle is heavier and larger than the English saddle. Most are covered in leather, and the underlining is typically sheepskin, wool, or acrylic.

English saddles are covered with plain leather with no designs or with a simulated leather or fabric covering and are often filled with foam or a mix of acrylic and wool.

Types of English Collegiate saddles

There are many types of English saddles. The main styles are the following:

  • All-purpose - These are used for both fences and the flat. They have deep seats with a long and forward-leaning flap. The flaps typically have added padding under the leg.
  • Jumping - These have a forward-facing flap for a shorter stirrup length. The cantle and pommel are low.
  • Dressage - These have a straight-cut flap and are longer than a jumping saddle. The pommel is higher, and the saddle is more forward.
  • Saddle seat - The Saddle seat, long and flat, is used most often with gaited and high-action horses.
  • Endurance - The Endurance saddle, based on a military saddle, is used for competitive endurance riding. It is designed to be comfortable and balanced.
  • English showing - This saddle is used on the flat or over low fences. The show saddle is minimal with a close fit and straight-cut flap.
  • Racing - A racing saddle is flat, light, and long. The stirrups are looped over the wooden bars of the half tree.
  • Polo - These saddles are flat with long saddle flaps.
Types of Western Collegiate saddles

Western saddles come in many styles. These are the main types available:

  • Flexible tree - These have a rigid cantle and fork but flexible bars.
  • Ranch - Ranch saddles are designed for comfort and have a deep seat with a high cantle.
  • Trail or pleasure - Trail saddles are lightweight with a padded seat. They often are used with a breast collar.
  • Roping - These saddles are heavy with strong trees and anchored horns.
  • Cutting - These saddles help with balance and have tall, thin horns and long, flat seats.
  • Reining - Reining saddles have forward-hung stirrups.
  • Barrel racing - These saddles are small and light, allowing easy maneuverability.
  • Endurance - Designed for long competitions, these saddles are sturdy yet lightweight.
  • Show - Show saddles are highly ornate saddles for the show ring.
