Choosing a Zoom Lens for Your Camera

Zoom Lenses extend the reach of your camera. It extends focal length. In choosing a zoom lens for your Canon SLR or other brands of camera, there are features you may want to consider.

What Are Essential Camera Lens Features?

  • Aperture. Check for maximum aperture, as it defines your capability to produce clear shots in low-lit conditions. Getting a camera with more options is recommendable, as it helps to improve image quality for the basic reason that is opens more options for low-light settings. Common settings you may likely play with are from f/4 wide aperture to an f/22 narrow one.
  • Focus.Check for focusing options. Some point-and-shoot cameras have good autofocus. The seasoned photographer might want a good manual mode of focusing with an efficient focusing ring. You may choose a camera that previews you what is actually in focus before you take a shot. For auto-focus lenses like Canon's EF 50 MM, the motor in use is STM and not USM. Consider STM motors for silent, smooth, and fast focusing.
  • Prime or Zoom lens.Prime lens differs from a zoom lens. Prime lenses do not allow you to zoom in and out. Prioritize the former if you want creative shots at fast apertures. Canon EF and other prime lenses give crisp details and desirable bokeh. A photographer will have a favorite lens depending on the types of photos he most often shoots. Good lenses for zooming will allow you to take good distance shots and shots of moving subjects.

What Are Useful Camera Accessories?

  • Camera Bag.Keep your Canon EF or other types of camera secure and easy to transport using a camera bag. It makes for a convenient and organized gathering of your photography equipment. Consider enough space to fit in your stock lens and your extra USM lens or other types of autofocus lens.
  • Tripod.Certain types of photography do better when you use a tripod. Long exposure shots, nature shots, even shooting through bokeh lenses can be more enhanced when you do so with a sturdy tripod. Consider lightweight but reliable tripods that maintain stability if you don't want your EF 50 mm or other camera to accidentally fall on the ground.
  • Neck Strap. You never know when your hands may slip or when someone might give you a strong shove or push from behind. Prepare for unforeseen accidents by securing your short or long mm lens with a strong neck strap. Keep it around the neck, wrist, or your hand as you prefer.
  • Air Blower. This is useful cleaning tool for USM and other lenses. It removes dust and particles, even those that cling from static electricity.
