Canon EF EOS M Mount Adapters

The Canon EF M Mount Adapter: An Indispensable Tool

If you bought some M lenses when you purchased your new Canon EOS M camera, you might wonder whether you should bother with a Canon lens adapter. Fortunately, there are plenty of vendors on eBay who will sell you a genuine canon EF-EOS M mount adapter at a fair price.

Why not just buy Canon EF-M lenses?

Canon introduced the EF mount back in 1987, and the company has created over 80 EF and EF-S lenses. There are also differences in the quality of the lenses. Some reviewers say that the EF-S lenses are superior to the M lenses. Others say that the M lenses work better at short focal lengths, but that the EF-S is still the better choice for normal and telephoto lenses. With a Canon lens adapter, you can have the best of both worlds.

What about Canon EOS M lens compatibility?

With the lens mount adapter, you can use any Canon autofocus lens made after 1987 with your EOS M camera. This covers the full range of EF and EF-S lenses. The adapter does much more than make sure the lens fits on properly. It must ensure full communication between the lens and the camera body for autofocus, aperture controls, and image stabilization. You can buy a Canon EF M mount adapter kit for canon EF/EF-S lenses. It includes an RF-3 body cap, to cover the lens opening when there is no lens in place, and also an EB lens dustcap to protect the lens itself. You will usually get much better value by buying the Canon mount adapter on eBay, and then buying the body cap and lens dustcap separately.

Can you use F mount lenses from other companies?

There are a number of reputable companies, such as Samyang, Tokina, and Carl Zeiss, who make F mount lenses that should work with your Canon EF EOS mount adapter. You may sometimes run into problems though, because these manufacturers' lenses will not have Canon's lens/body communication system.

What is the difference between genuine and 3rd party adapters?
  • Less sturdy: Genuine Canon adapters will bear the weight of the lenses better, while a 3rd party adapter may not be as sturdy.
  • Technical issues: Canon EOS M adapter reviews note that 3rd party adapters sometimes don't mate as well or have issues with electronic coupling. You are more likely to have problems with flare and haze when you don't use a genuine Canon mount adapter.
  • Compatibility issues: Some 3rd party adapters will work on the EOS M but not the EOS M3.
