A good way to tell the peel depth is by the level of frosting (skin turning white) on the area where the TCA is applied to your skin. If there is mild frosting, or scattered areas of wispy white frost over mostly pink skin, then your skin is undergoing a superficial epidermal peel. Your skin will flake for 2- 5 days. This result can be expected from 10%-15% TCA peels.
If your skin is shiny but there is no frosting when it is applied, the peel is superficial and, at best, has peeled away at the stratum corneum. This result can be expected from 8%-10% TCA peels. If your skin does not within 5 minutes after the first coating is applied, apply a second coating, which gives the peel a 25% boost.
If the skin has a mostly white color with pink undertones, then your skin is undergoing a full epidermal peel. It will scab and flake for 5-7 days before it heals completely. This result can be expected from 15%-30% TCA peels.
If your skin shows an intense, all-white white frost with no pink undertones, then the peel likely extends into the papillary dermis and takes 7-14 days to heal. This result can be expected from TCA peels of 30% concentration and above.
At-home TCA peels come with detailed instructions on how to apply, which should be followed carefully. Although TCA peels generally neutralize on their own, the instructions will recommended that all TCA peels be neutralized, regardless, by mixing baking soda and water into a paste and then applying it to the treated area. This is a good idea for those who worry the TCA has penetrated too deeply into their skin. You will know the peel has neutralized when the frosting (whiteness) fades.
Once the peel has neutralized, DO NOT TOUCH IT. Picking at the peel or peeling off the peeling/flaking skin before it is ready to come off dramatically increases the risk for scarring and discoloration, so it is important that you do not do this. The peeling skin should not come off until it is ready.
TCA peels of 20% concentration or more come with a slightly higher risk of scarring and discoloration than lower-strength TCA peels, and those risks increase for TCA peels above 30% concentration. If you are afraid that the strength of the TCA peel is too strong for your skin, then simply dilute it with water to the desired amount, as TCA peels consist only of water and TCA.
